me and TLTD once tried this experiment to figure out what was "wrong" with most eleven rack cab/mic combos....they had too much fizz or piercing highs. now that i have a few decent options to A/B against, i decided to revisit the eq experiment once again.

to participate in this test, you must try this post eq setting BEFORE you listen to anything else or jam. you ears must be fresh or this will sound dull.

the post eq setting is as follows:

LF -4db, 250hz, Q .7, shelf
HF -24db, 5khz, Q .7, shelf

there will still be some highs in there (as it should be) but for the most part the digital high frequency fake crap will be gone.

when i had the axe-fx ultra, the first lesson i learned real quick was that it needed low and high end rolloff. if i mic'd a real amp in the studio i would roll off some highs and lows, so why not do it on the eleven rack?

i'm going to go on record and say that this eq "fix" will allow most anyone to easily dial in something worth using without having to jump through hoops.

step 1:

setup an EQ after the amp/cab, and put in the EQ settings i listed above.

step 2:

pick any amp and cabinet you want and adjust the amp tone controls to taste. simple things like V30 cab with sm57 off axis will sound more like the real world.

for most people this will solve a lot of problems.

don't like the feel of the amp? this is where the tweak-heads get into trouble. i have a basic eq setting for that too.

PRE-EQ setting:

LF -21.8db, 194.7hz, Q 8.9 HP6
LMF 2.2db, 1.2khz, Q 5.3
HMF leave alone for now.
HF -11.8db, 3.2khz, Q 4.5 peaking

try this setting in front of a JCM800 and you will start to get a nice warm Plexi feel from it.

what else can i do with this ultra cool pre-eq? glad you asked. try boosting the LMF to 9db (or more if you dare), then cut some mids on the post eq at that same frequency (1.2khz) and enjoy the fluid lead tone with plenty of sustain.

don't feel like turning any knobs or experimenting at all? that's why i made the Singtall Superpack. enjoy.
