Looking for advice on which small (5") active monitors someone would recommend for bedroom playing with the 11r. Looking for something to get great tone with for playing as well as practicing to jam tracks and possibly some small time laptop mixing.

Not looking for anything to playout with in the 12" category just for small home recording and practice.

TIA

What's your budget? People rave about the Mackie MR5 MK3's, but I had a hard time getting bass to sit well in my mixes with them. If you're looking in the "affordable" range, Yamaha HS5's sound pretty good, but you can get the HS7's for about $140 more. I listened to the Eris E5's a few months ago while I was shopping. They sounded pretty good / flat and they have a front port.

If you're looking in the high end range, the Adam A5X's are amazing.

As far as tone, you'll want your monitors as flat as possible for mixing. Exaggerated hi / mid / low are a nightmare during mixdown.

JBL LSR305's. Amazing speakers for the money along with great reviews.

I use just one Behringer B2031a (the 8" studio monitor) for this and it is great!

I also have the JBL LSR305s and I only use them for mixing, the 305s are a bit lacking in bass, but the behringer has just been better suited for the task of running the 11r in the room, sounds great at low volumes. In addition I have an Akai RPM800 that sounds good for this as well but it is physically larger so I use the behringer.

You should be able to find an 8" monitor on 'Bay for ~$100-$150.
I wouldn't recommend a 5" speaker for this as you will miss out on the real meat of the tone..

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into them. I was close to purchasing the Mackie MRK5 but figured I would ask in here first.

My price range is about $300 tops.

Thanks for the help!

How do the Alto TX 8 compare to the Behringer B2031a?

Not the same at all, the TX8 is not designed for the goal of most accurate reproduction of sound (like a studio monitor would be), it is instead designed for loudness with a compromise in accuracy. I went this route as well in the beginning and settled on an EV zlx12p, I use that for shows, the 8" stage monitors I tried sounded off in some way (though I didn't try the high end ones like the K8).

Stage monitors can get loud, and the way they sound at bedroom levels is way different than they sound when cranked. There is also a difference in sonic signature at low vs high volumes with studio monitors but it is lessened somewhat, partly by design, partly because the volume range is less than stage monitors.

I have found the sound I get when tracking the 11r sounds most like the sound I get from an 8" studio monitor at low to moderate volumes, thats just my experience..

Been using the Wharfedale 8.1... 5inch active for a few years and they are great. Translate very well with a flat response. Kevlar speaker cone.
check the reviews.
here is an ebay listing to give you an idea of price.
