i just recently mic'd up my cheap drumset with some cheap audio technica mics and i'm attempting to get a tone worthy of recording.

this is clip is to document where i am with the drum tone as of today (day 1).

any feedback is welcome.

this is literally the cheapest big drum set and mics that i could put together. i bought the kit and cymbals for my son a couple years ago, and he never plays them, so now i'm using them.

mics: MB/Dk6 Drum-Microphone Pack || Audio-Technica US

drumset: Pulse 4000 Series 8-Piece Double Bass Drum Shell Pack | Musician's Friend

It sounds refreshing in the sense that it reminds me of independently released cassettes from rock and metal bands in the late 80's/early 90's. You could make them sound more 'studio' with some post production, but in the right situation this sound would definitely work in a retro kinda way.

i'm fairly rooted in the 80's, so my drum sounds kinda sound that way too. lol.

on the clip i just used a little eq/gate/compression on each drum, so i have room for much more if need be.

my first goal was to capture the natural sound of my drums. from there i can mangle the tone until it works for what i want to sound like. right now, i'm not sure what i want the drums to sound like. the big reverb is definitely an 80's throwback sound for sure.

Sounds good to me...Sometimes simple is best...Many people spend countless hours trying get a retro raw sound in the digital perfect world, when sometimes it is simple as using some old beat up gear and mic techniques... Jack White comes to mind...

I like it. The kick cuts through well and the snare has a nice snap to it. Well done.

The drums sound better than I expected those mics to sound, but I still would notice they aren't as polished if this was on a commercial release. There seems to be alot of shared space (in the frequency spectrum) between the kick and snare, they both seem to have alot of low-mids, probably around 3-400hz. If it were my track I would try to cut some low-mids from the snare and see if I could brighten the top, but that's just me.

So are you sub-mixing this down to two tracks, or miking bass & snare, w/ two overheads, etc.?
