Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW

Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW - 12/21/15 07:13 PM

For those who are interested, you need two short cables (I am sure most guitarists have spares in their pedalboard case). Connect from FX Send to Line In. Enable the FX Loop block, disable the built-in Cab Sim. Completely turn down the FX Return level.

In your DAW, choose Line In as your input. Load your IR plug-in on your track. Then you are ready to rock and roll wink

If this works in Cakewalk, that would be GREAT!

I'm perfectly happy with the EPSi for loading cabs with zero latency, but you would always have that ability to switch cabinets after the fact and expiriment with some FX too, without Pro Tools (which always had latency when I tried any of those things).

Nice find.

It should work. I use Reaper. You can use one cable only if you don't play stereo

I have always wanted to do this with 11R, it took me one and a half year to figure it out

Thinking about trying this just to play with some plugins in real time. Not even sure if I want to get back into external IRs, but how's that going for everyone? Any latency/resorce issues?

I don't feel great latency there, but I use 96k and 64 frames buffer which is just a few ms

Re: Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW - 01/20/16 06:19 AM

8ms latency (256 samples buffer), but I didn't try to lower the buffer (tendinitis prevent me from playing in these days).

That's not too bad, I can get used to it when I'm just jamming in headphones anyway and don't hear the guitar.

Re: Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW - 01/20/16 10:09 AM

Trying it with some IRs...for some reason it's weird unless the FX Loop is last, after I moved it, seems fine. Presets where I put the FX Block right after the amp for some reason just don't sound or feel right.

Definitely working in Sonar X3. Definitely some latency, but not too bad, might be a problem for multitracking, I dunno but GREAT FIND. Should've tried this out sooner.

Basically, you'll not hear anything with the FX Loop on until you click echo audio input on a track, so then you can turn the cabinets off and load an IR in your DAW.

Unlimited possibilities now. You can really appreciate the difference after going back to the Eleven Rack cabinets for a few days. Much better feel with the Ownhammer cabinets, by far.

With SIR2 (IR loader VST), I can stretch out the IR time, widen, etc. I had it stretched to 150%, wondered why it seemed like it was actually better this way. And if I record like that and chang my mind later, I can just put it back without reamping. YES!

Kinda nice to play with the DAW compressors and things and see what everything feels like. Enjoying this much.

Bump

Still the only way to try out software IR loaders that's aren't JUST your basic IR loaders (higher quality also).

NO WAY! Someone actually figured this out. Is it for real? I will try tonight. I have been longing for this ability with Reaper FOREVER! Thank You! I am praying, lol. I did a similar thing and it didn't quite work.

Yup. It's opened up a lot of possibilities, at least for recording into Sonar. The best thing is all you record is the preamp sound, so can swap cabinets later if you need to for the mix or whatever.

Re: Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW - 03/24/16 05:40 AM

Say, I was thinking about this, I have not tried yet, no time, ughh. Anyway, couldn't we connect the main Xlr outs to the effects returns, via xlr to 1/4 inch cables, then the effects sends to the line in L/R,(set to rack)? That way we could do it in stereo, right? Or am I pushing it here? As long as all the levels are LOW to start, I don't think it would hurt anything right? Basically running the 11r preamp through it's own effects loop. I'm NOT SURE, so don't do it, if your not comfy, just another idea I will try FIRST. When I do I'll let you guys know, I need some xlr to 1/4 cables first. What do you think?

Re: Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW - 03/24/16 05:55 AM

One more thing. You would want to, I think, put the loop at the end of the chain, like first mentioned, allowing you to retain your front of preamp effects. For ambient stuff, go get yourself the eventide anthology demo, (30 days no limitations, I think), open a track select line in STEREO, load the h3000, then your cab ir loader. Then Ultimate JOY. Fractal Who??? I hope it works, Like I said, I'm not sure, have not tried it YET, so proceed with caution, if you want to try my idea. My last one was an epic fail, lol. But.. Austin got me thinking some more, lol. That can be dangerous, lol.

You know what the lamest thing about this whole issue is that, all Avid would need to do is update the 11r driver to support, ASIO Direct Monitoring, but because they want to FORCE you to buy pro-drools, they wont do it. It 's already there, pro-tools shuts off the dry input automatically, I have complained many, many times and either people don't get it, or Avid just does not care. It would be really easy to update the firmware to accommodate a few user ir slots too and the Eleven rack would sell like hot cakes and still compete, but they are too stupid to acknowledge these facts. Rant over. Have Fun, the 11r still smokes anything other than the axe, IMO.

Re: Realtime playing Eleven Rack with IR in DAW - 03/26/16 08:21 PM

One thing I think makes a huge difference, and maybe this is just me, but there's a way SIR2 is able to modify IRs to get them just right, and the length can be adjusted. It's called "stretch," and it allows frequencies to resonate longer, so, there's not this fizzy sound (arguably needed), and it has a better feel for me, I just want to play a lot. And that's without any pedals or anything, just pure Eleven Rack and almost any fairly decent IR. I don't know what the Axe FX FEELS like, but I imagine it's something like that. If Logidy ever comes up with a mod button that does that, I'm going back to the Logidy IR loader method for sure.
