Ownhammer ORANGE V3 Cabinets - 03/15/15 09:24 AM

These are great & feel and sound quite a bit like the real thing. I've not found anything close and have been trying to mess with impulses to get these sounds. I got my four favorite speakers and they're not going to be an all-in-one replacement for my old favorites but pretty impressed with the feel and depth.

Haven't had time to record, but here's my mini review of the "mix" impulses (there's only one in each, but they're excellent).

H-CB-75
Based on a 2013 8-ohm Celestion T5890B 75-Hz cone "Creamback" G12H-75, made in England.

The OwnHammer_412_ORNG_M-CB-75 is great for riffs and shredding and I started to love this speaker quite a bit in the Modern Studio High Gain pack because it is virtually noise free yet cuts through and has a nice full bodied sound.

H-BB-55
Based on a 1977 15-ohm Celestion T1281 55-Hz cone "black back" G12H.

The OwnHammer_412_ORNG_H-BB-55_Mix one has the speaker I found in the Vintage Studio Mix library to match some of the 80s rock sounds like White Lion. This one's not as "open" but I like it because of that, actually.

H-SB-75
Based on a 2010 16-ohm 75-Hz cone Scumback H75.

The 802 OwnHammer_412_ORNG_H-SB-75_Mix I preferred over the M's on the Marshall Checkerbord cabinet mixes, but this one is like the H-BB-55, not so open and fizzy but that's what I liked about the real Orange cabinets. I'm curious about the Ms now. I know the Ms were better for my other guitar, but through orange cabinets, I may have to check out the Ms for my Maple Neck/Tonezone this time. But you guys will probably like this one over that so it's hard to say but if you like Scumbacks but find yourself post EQing, this may be better for you and will contrast in your mix since it's a different color of Scumback altogether. Guessing detuned, it's a monster. *The other option is actually the 8 ohm J75...hmmm...

V30-CH-16
Based on a 2005 16-ohm Celestion T3904 Vintage 30, made in China.

The OwnHammer_412_ORNG_V30-CH-16_Mix is the trustiest V30 cabinet speaker for me, and this one's not as "huffy" as the checkerboard, but I found it has a snappy sound for lower gain and split pickup sounds. I can almost say for certain, this will rock with a strat or tele and single coils and is nice & clean.

So I am liking these enough to return for the Scumback Js and I see there's an EVH V30 (2013) and am very curious about that one too. Lot of what if's now because speakers I may not have liked may be great. I'm also gonna have to try out the trust SM57 impulses and see what I think too. I'm not sure why we can't see which power amp is used like in the Studio Mix Packs. I DO NOT like the file naming on these, I'm hoping that there are updates for us buying these on day one.

They also have a modern & metal pack you can try out. I'm going to side with a previous post here that this needs to be thrown all together for about $30 or $40, but I've only spent like $15 on four speakers I knew were solid for me. I probably wont spend more than they would charge, but sure would like to be able to test them all without buying them all.

I can probably use what I got and blend them to make the perfect sound for me, so thought I would recommend these speakers anyway. It took quite a while to come to the conclusion that these are the best from all those I've tried in other cabinets so worth a look if you are lost as to where to start. The catchy ENGL, MESA, BGNR, DEZL or whatever cabinet ones don't always mean you'll get what you're looking for so don't go buying brands without trying some of these would be my best advice, but the V3 speakers & cabinets have been top notch so far, so take with a grain of salt.

At least the Modern & Metal grab bags are only $5 each.

Update: I just scrolled through again, all the way to the bottom & there's so many V30s for this, it's gonna hurt if I start getting too curious lol Let me know if you go for one of them and like it. The stock Orange V30 itself is something I've tried out and it's a beast for detuned riffs and solos through a Rockerverb & a baritone guitar anyway. Arrrr! haha

When I said there was one "Mix" for each, that's just the one labeled "Mix" inside the Mixes directory, which contains a bunch of "Precise Modern/Vintage" and Raw versions. They seem to just go down hill as you go along, but first impression anyway (goes for all the V3 libraries so far).

Got the EVH V30 one and the Orange V30 one...

The EVH is OUTSTANDING. It beats them all in my opinion. Scumbacks, V30s, everything.

It brings the gain out more in all my patches, really cutting, yet full bodied. It's "bigger" and more dynamic than the others by far. Neck pup and middle single coil shreds nicely and you can get some mad pinch harmonics out of this thing.

Grabbed my son's guitar and tried it and absolutely growls for detuned riffs too. The others will still meh compared to the EVH.

Is this the EDVH in the orange cab? If not, which and which? Thanks for your informative posts!

EDVH
Based on a 2013 15-ohm Celestion T5670B G12-EVH, made in England.

Yeah, that's the one. I wish they'd just make a pack of this speaker in all the cabinets. There's a sample of it in the Marshall TV cabinet that sounds cool too: https://soundcloud.com/justin-woodward-m...-beta-tone-test

I still like the feel of the Chinese V30 that was in the 412-GTR MAR-CB MIX Modern Speaker Collection too. It's very classic VH sounding/feels great. Nice & open and still keeping me playing on it more than the others. http://www.ownhammer.com/store/index.php...products_id=104

• V30-CH
(based on Chinese Celestion Vintage 30)

That should work as well for anyone looking to use impulses of classic Celestion Greenbacks too, as the G12-EVH speakers are EXACTLY the same speakers as the Heritage G12M's...just relabeled for the EVH cabinets.

Celestion Heritage G12M Greenbacks

Although, I see they have the "M-Pro20-75" to cover the vintage Greenback territory. I wonder how that compares to the EVH one???

I gotta get me an Epsi to start checking out all these impulses that yall are all talking about.

Interesting info, it's fun to start to rummage through the site looking for speakers. I'm going to get this one next because I loved the MAR-CB that they used for all the Modern Studio Mix speakers & I do like that huffiness & air they were pushing. It's nice to have the orange sounds too, might even try some blending of different cabinets now & see how it goes.

Re: Ownhammer ORANGE V3 Cabinets - 03/25/15 01:28 PM

TLTD, did you get any other cabs? If you did, how does this cab compare to other cabs (Bogner, Mesa, Sunn)?

I got about 20 different cab/speaker IRs from the V3 editions and I find them to be a little tinny or something, something in the high end is too much (though I think the Sunn is the best and definitely usable!). That is also what makes them sound, to me, crisp for riffing. But it gets way more fatiguing than the Modern and Vintage Studio Mix packs.

I'm thinking this may be because they were just about custom designed for the AxeFx II architecture (he used the AxeFx II in creating and mixing his tones), and may not be as good a fit for the 11R.. There is a rather lengthy discussion on the Fractal forum where Kevin (from Ownhammer) mentions the AxeFx II as integral to his mixing process for the V3 speakers sets..

At some point I will get some comparison clips up..

Re: Ownhammer ORANGE V3 Cabinets - 03/26/15 02:27 AM

I need to try some more. I still think the previous method and mixes are good and have a better feel overall, but these will be great for riffing and things or with an EQ. They're particularly good with more gain, so the M2 Lead sounds really great with it and dialing down a bit on my guitar still leaves me with quite a lot of dynamics and I want to say a more album like tone like for instance reminds me of the Extreme III sound with my guitar now. Since I usually always EQ quite a bit, they were quite usable for certain styles and you'll most likely be tweaking your presets yet again, but should be getting some interesting sounds you couldn't get before. I was going to say that the harmonics are a lot better too, and there's more of an attack for me on neck pickup solos, but I think it's my mostly due to my new NYXL strings. Those are great.

Might have to check out the Sunn cabinet.

I think people who like bluesier and less gainy sounds will like these & will be great for blending in with the old ones on tracks. Lots of reamping to try again and see how it goes. I wish there were more DIs out there of popular songs because there's definitely some kind of raw studio tone matching or something happening and might not appreciate it until you're hearing it with the rest of the tracks.

Excuse me for being ignorant, but where are you using the IRs; within a DAW with the ELEVEN equivalent of a VST?

Thanks
Steve

Re: Ownhammer ORANGE V3 Cabinets - 03/26/15 01:08 PM

Hi Steve, I am using it outside of a DAW, in an IR loader in the effects loop of the 11r. As far as the IR loader goes, some of us (myself included) are using the Logidy EPSi (version C), it is a stompbox style IR loader with stereo ins and outs and really low latency. I have it in the 11r effects loop after the cab block (with cab sim bypassed). This is then returned to the 11r and 11r rig-output to my FRFR (zlx12p). You can find out more about it here:

Logidy EPSi

Some other people are using the Two Notes Torpedo C.A.B. in the same way. The Two Notes unit has a couple extra things like power tube amp emulation, MIDI, multiple footswitches, and more flexible EQing, but it is more than twice the price (~$475 vs $200).

These units both come with their own IRs of cabs, but I have found the OwnHammer IRs to be much better than the stock ones, for me at least..

Of course you can also use these IRs in a DAW, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Thanks Downrazor, will look into this. Thought it would be a pedal of some sort. Appreciate the advice.
