Can somebody point me in the right direction to achieve something similar to this tone?:

Re: Kotzen tone request - 10/31/14 06:08 PM

i've got several presets in that same vein. if you wanted to try to make your own version just to learn how to do it, i have some hints (but i will be making a preset anyway).

1) start the way he does; amp model will be either a plexi (if you like the messy artifacts, or a jcm800 if you like it a little more clean.

2) my cabinet suggestion is the celestion 20w, or 25w, followed by the v30 if you like more mids.

3) microphone i would try is the sm7 on or off axis.

4) pre-eq to roll off some highs/lows if you are using a tele or strat. the easiest way is to add a tube screamer with the tone below halfway. i use a parametric eq and roll off a bunch of 3khz and above, then cut some low end also to kill the flabbyness.

from there i would add another eq after the amp model to tweak the final tone to taste.

i haven't been able to play much lately, but i will add this preset request to this month's superpack updates.

Richie Kotzen in Guitar Magazine (Japan) June 2013 :
"I used various amplifiers, but mainly Fender Vibrolux and Vibroking. I used Fender Bassman with Vibrolux at the same time. By using different amplifiers with different characters at the same time, I could create very deep and rich sound. For example, heavy guitar part of “ The Dying “ is by this combination. Also I used Marshall 100W Plexi with 4 X 12 inch speakers cabinet for heavy and aggressive rhythm parts. This is very effective to create additional texture behind main guitar part."

Re: Kotzen tone request - 11/01/14 01:54 PM

I think one I use (and have posted a version of before) could be a good starting point. I use this all the time:

Dist: Blackop Dist, Dist = 2.7, Cut = 6, Vol = 10
Amp: BlackVib, Vol = 10, Treb = 10, Mid = 7, Bass = 4.5, bright = off
Cab: 4x12 Classic 30, Mic = Dyn 7, on-axis, spkr breakup = 8.5
Reverb: Small Club, mix = 1.8, decay/tone = 5, pre-dly = 45ms

Using a 50's classic vibe tele, I have to add a para eq block (after the amp) and drop some mids @ 470 Hz and maybe around 1.9 kHz to sound closer.

It is missing some of the raw, raspy low end distortion that he has on that track... but maybe you can tweak from there and get something you are happy with. Good luck and maybe let us know what you end up using. I like that tone and wouldn't mind being closer to it.

Re: Kotzen tone request - 11/02/14 11:59 AM

Just saw them in Atlanta and hung out back stage with them courtesy of our Fender rep a few months ago.. Richie was using a Plexi full stack.. also saw it loaded in to their trailer so I assume it wasn't cartage.. he also uses an RK100 in the studio that's his old sig amp from Conrford.. they are LOUD old school amps... the plexi was ridiculously LOUD!

Re: Kotzen tone request - 11/06/14 12:16 PM

So I got to see Richie do a sound check last night at BB kings and this time he was using Bogner wooden boxes with speakers in em' wink Not sure what he was feeding them with.

BUT, I did get to see him do an interview (I am assuming for Tech 21) on his new signature pedal. This a variation of the Fly Rig 5 (two-stage overdrive, a delay with a tap tempo, and a flutter function, (for chorus type effect) and the SansAmp with reverb). Ritchie stated that he sets the SansAmp flat to take it out of the equation and only uses the reverb. This is an improvement on his 'home made version' that he used before (on Winery Dogs tour as Portnoy teased him about it).

As he went through the set up, it became clear that he sets the amp for a clean tone and uses the Pedal to get his tone! shocked grin

The major difference between the Fly Rig and Richie's signature version is the distortion in that it uses LED distortion (Like the RAT distortion pedal).

His rhythm tone is distortion with delay, reverb and a touch of the 'flutter' effect. When he needs the extra sustain (solo), he kicks in the boost on the overdrive. It doesn't alter the tone just adds major sustain. \m/

This explains to me how he keeps his tone (live at least) so consistent grin ! The interview was being videoed (or is that captured now?) so hopefully it will be on the Tech21 site or YouTube soon.

I didn't capture this (I decided to actually watch the gig rather then seeing it on my phone screen! :/), but here he is rockin' it last night!

I guess they keep the meat and 2 veg at the right temperature shocked so they may well work and be the secret ingredient to the tone!!! wink

Re: Kotzen tone request - 11/09/14 06:25 PM

sorry for the delay in getting these presets made, it's been crazy at my house for the last 3 weeks. today was my first free day to work on presets.

as usual, these presets will be added to the superpack.

being close to holiday time, i felt like sharing these presets and a few more that i'm working on tonight.

enjoy.

oh, and i made these presets using a tele with stacked coils, so your mileage may vary....which is why i made 4 different presets for the same tone. any les paul type guitar should work ok. adjust to taste.

I had the time to try the presets today. The plexi one works great with my power engine.

Thanks a lot Ross, you're great

Re: Kotzen tone request - 11/16/14 10:19 PM

i figured the plexi would be the one based on what Kotzen himself uses.
