Mac or Pc for 11r+pro tools - 08/14/14 05:25 AM

Hey there,
First of all I am sure that both are great and can produce great results BUT I do not have the time to learn and match components to make a beast of a PC so in my case would a Mac be better?
Also which one works with pro tools best?

If I choose a Mac is there a big difference between an iMac and a mini? There is in price. I have to buy a monitor and keyboard(with protools shortcuts if possible) since I know that hooking it up to an HDTV is bad. Thanks in advance.

Don't know too much about PT w/ on a Mac since I use Logic ProX (which I really like.) If you're thinking about going with a Mac, the Mac Mini might be the ticket, but I would hold off for a bit. It's due for a refresh and rumors suggest Apple might be introducing a new Mac Mini soon.

Thanks for your reply. Great advice on holding a little. In the meantime i found a used 21" mac for €800($1,072), do you think its worthit?it is just a year old. My concern is not so much the 21" screen as when i saw it live i was surprised how comfortable it is(been shooting for the 27") but the cpu speed (2.9 ghz) does it make THAT much of a difference? Even the 27" models have a 3.2 and a 3.4 with around €200 difference in price!

In general it is preferable to a have two drives, with one drive dedicated to audio recording and playback. I am not a Mac guy, so no ideas there. But you can get Windows laptops with two drives (or the ability to install). Typically a SSD for the OS and a mechanical drive for the data.

Assuming you are looking at Protools 11 you can get all the compatibility information here:

Really, Mac or PC, Pro Tools runs fine on either. Just like any other HIGH END software though there are certain optimizations and hardware constraints.

The Pro Tools PC is a PC specially built and optimized for use with Pro Tools. It is built by Neil Hester from Pro Tools expert and Robin Vincent, who now runs Rain Computers are the people who put this together. It is generally a cheaper solution than a MacBook pro or an Imac. The Mac mini is NOT supported at this time for Pro Tools

guitardom at The DUC is the U.S. and North American representative, I believe he still is.

Open Windows - Sound on Sound article This is an interesting read about the ProTools PC.

No I am not affiliated. No I don't own one, but will when I get around to upgrading my current PC.

Just MY $ .02

Hey there happy to report I'm sending this message from my new iMac as the used one turned out to be quite doubtful. I encountered a problem with my eleven rack which I will post on a different thread. thanks
