Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader

Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/21/14 07:27 AM

If you've ever wished that the 11R could load cabinet impulses, check out the Logidy EPSi version C. Got one last week and could not be happier with this little $199 box.

EPSi

Takes the 11R to whole new level for me. I can now load my favorite cab (EV loaded thiele 1x12) mic'd by various mics at various distances and finally enjoy the FRFR experience (CLR) in a way that just wasn't possible with the 11R's internal cabs/mics.

Did a search here and found no info on it...has anyone else discovered this little gem?

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/21/14 08:15 PM

it loads 44khz 16 or 24 bit IR's. sounds like it can load any IR that meets those specs. might be worth trying out.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/22/14 01:19 PM

And it's stereo, unlike the C.A.B., so you can utilize stereo IRs...and you don't need to buy two of them to run stereo, also unlike the Torpedo!

It doesn't have the deep editing that the Torpedos do, but for an anti-tweaker like myself, it's the perfect solution.

I wasn't crazy about many of the internal IRs that came with it, but I tried a couple of free IRs from Redwirez and Ownhammer and ended up buying the EV thiele cabs from Ownhammer for $9...very happy guy here!

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/22/14 07:08 PM

that was my next question: which brand of IR's work best with it.

i had a warm marshall cab IR with the axe-fx that was so nice, i wonder if i could find a way to load it up?

As long as it's a 44.1 / 16 or 24 bit IR...stereo or mono...it should work fine with the EPSi.

You can also use it as a convolution reverb by loading the other firmware. Check out some of the demos on youtube...sounds beautiful.

ahhh sweet sweet gas

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/23/14 05:25 PM

I wonder, would this unit go after the 11R to a FRFR speaker or could you this sit in the FX Loop? Any ideas?

The unit does sound interesting.

I have played some with IR's on a computer setup, And they make a hell of difference when using modeling. Although the 11R still sounds great,(better than my HD500) I'm still trying to achieve the "that's It" tone with my EV elx112p live setup.

All you'd need is two SD cards, could use both versions.

Yup, dido with the "sweet gas" statement.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/24/14 06:07 AM

I've been using it in the loop of the 11R (100% mix of course), but it would work just fine after the 11R too...just have to be careful how hot your signal is to the unit, since the input is designed for a guitar level signal. I'll have to try sending the amp outputs to it for kicks.

I've had no issues with overloading the input with it in the loop, but I do have it set to "stompbox".

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/24/14 07:59 AM

Slightly off topic - but I have a 2 Notes Torpedo CAB that I use with the 11R. I tried it in the FX Loop but have been happier with it after the Output To Amp. I thought through the signal path of an analog rig - the speaker cab/mic are the very last pieces. As such, I have elected to use it there.

YMMV of course, but that's how I prefer it.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/24/14 01:26 PM

i would think that it could be used in the effects loop after all effects.

i'm confused here....i thought the device was line level? why would someone make it guitar level? that makes no sense to me.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/24/14 01:54 PM

I believe it was built this way because it was designed to be a reverb pedal, but so many requests were made for them to make it also able to load cab/mic IRs that they came up with the firmware to make it work.

I've had no trouble with it in the loop, but I'll have to try it using the main outs to see if there are any issues. I think there is enough control in the output of the 11R to make it a non-issue though.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/24/14 02:57 PM

The Torpedo has both line and guitar level options.

It worked ok in the loop for me - I just prefer to have it after the output as I use a M9 in the loop and sometimes put the FX Loop before the amp model.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/24/14 03:14 PM

well, even as a reverb it should go in the loop of either an amp or a modeler, so im confused about the guitar level

Maybe email the folks at Logidy for more info? They seem to be interested in feedback as well.

RBG
Another question,

In your opinion, How well of a job does this unit do?

When it comes to Convoulution Cab IR's, plugins like S-Gear really work well at
"warming" tone with a studio setup. This is what I hope this Logidy box will do with the 11R and a FRFR powered speaker.

The 11R is a great unit, but still have to be careful in setting up rigs, for it can get
"digital sounding", Especially when adding distortion and highs.

I know tone is subjective, I have been in search of a unit that will do this "warming" factor for me in a live setup.

Anyway, Thank You for sharing your thoughts and experiences on this unit.
Appreciate it.

BMoe

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 03:59 AM

In my opinion, it does exactly that..."warming" is a good description.

I had the para eq set to roll off highs and lows with a slight mid boost with my favorite Matchless patch, but since adding the EPSi, I've removed the mid boost and now need only a high/low shelf...basically set flat other than the bandpass. I still need the para eq to roll off the highs, (I set a 3.3k shelf), so the IR isn't perfect on it's own, (for me anyway), but needs nothing else. I roll off the lows at about 70hz, which is where the CLR drops off.

I bought the Modern Studio Mix for the Marshall 4x12 from Ownhammer yesterday and just got started auditioning cabs, but I'm very impressed so far. I bought the EV thiele 1x12 set last week and thought that was it...until I started listening to these new cabs. So good...really a huge improvement for me.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 03:03 PM

Guy's I'm not "up" on IR's like you are, can someone please tell me if some IR's end with "wav" extension?

Thanks

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 03:15 PM

The Logidy EPSi uses IRs that are standard "wav" format.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 03:18 PM

Yes irs are (usually) small waw files wich ( to be short and simple) are used as a reference by the effect wich use them to replicate the reverb/effect used to produce the waw.

RGB

Thanks, thats what I'm looking for is "warm"

I have the Red Wires set, but Ownhammer sounds like its a pretty good IR.

I get if your not connected to a computer a lot maybe but arent there plugins to load IRs? Sorry i don't remember a lot about this sort of stuff i went away from anything digital for quite a long time till i got my 11r.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 03:36 PM

The 11r is not capable of loading IR's.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 05:11 PM

Yes i am aware i was refering to vst pluggins in a daw. I seem to remember a pluggin i used to use to load IRs if your using it at the end of the chain wouldn't it make sense to just add it on your computer? Like i said i understand if your not hooked up to a computer at all times but for $200 i don't mind. I guess i never paid attention if there is a way to shut off the monitoring of the eleven rack and just monitor the final signal coming out of the daw.

Re: Logidy EPSi convolution IR loader - 04/25/14 05:43 PM

i might pick one of these up to use with my rocktron prophesy. i haven't powered the preamp up in a couple years because the cab sims aren't too good. with this IR loader i could use the prophesy as a backup rig.

i probably won't use it with the eleven rack though. i have too many presets in the singtall superpack that use just what's in the box. i think i have gotten a handle on how to make the eleven rack sound good even with stock cabs. if i add the Logidy IR loader, then my presets based on the Logidy won't translate to anyone else but someone with the Logidy and the same IR loaded in it.

I think the idea is for live use, to have access to more cabs than the unit comes with, without the price tag associated with the Torpedo Live.
