One thing that has puzzled me conceptually is how to set levels through a rig so that there isn't the wrong kind of clipping at any point in the signal path.

As I understand it, you can see metering at various points in the path-- which can help.

But I'm wondering if there is a general "best practices" approach to setting levels through pre effects, amp, cab, loop, post fx, etc. to keep things safely below clipping.

Any tips?

To be more specific, assuming the input signal of the guitar is safely below digital clipping. Then there are quite a few models that add gain. And the manual mentions things like putting models that boost gain before the amp sim, etc. However, at what point would pushing gain at multiple stages of the various models boost signal above digital clipping? And, are there rules of thumb for when and how to boost to keep things distorted in the right way?
