Title pretty much says it all for my question.

I'm trying to load a couple of custom IRs I've found in the past month, but I wanted the advice of this community before I downloaded a bunch of software that might be obsolete (or just doesn't work with the Eleven Rack or Pro Tools). I'm new to IR's so I don't know if there's any physical hardware I need to also purchase (I've read about maybe needing a Logidy EPSi?) or if there's anything else I would need to purchase.

Thanks guys!

Oh and btw: I still use Singtall's Presets RELIGIOUSLY even after three years of ownership!

I purchased an EPSi to expand the capabilities of my11R and think it was worth every penny. Loaded with OwnHammer IRs, you can't go wrong. Endless variety of killer tone. You will love it.

That's awesome, and thanks for the input.

..but do I HAVE to have one of those to take advantage of an Impulse I found on the internet with the Eleven Rack or are there free alternatives?

I'm having an issue also:

I cannot get Reaper to output any audio from live playing (with VST's on it...like in this case an IR) and cannot get it to output anything I record either.

I set Reaper up with the Eleven Rack Asio settings and still nothing.

I never have issues with Pro Tools and the audio set up with Eleven Rack, but I always run into this issue with Reaper and the 11R.

I'm choosing Reaper to try out these IRs because I don't have a VST wrapper to use for Pro Tools frown

There's a way to do this now...I'm trying to find the thread, but I believe it's sending your FX Loop out to the rear inputs and using those for recording in your DAW (and make sure your tracks have that echo audio button lit up).

For those who are interested, you need two short cables (I am sure most guitarists have spares in their pedalboard case). Connect from FX Send to Line In. Enable the FX Loop block, disable the built-in Cab Sim. Completely turn down the FX Return level.

In your DAW, choose Line In as your input. Load your IR plug-in on your track. Then you are ready to rock and roll wink

Update:

I just wanted to let you guys know I got it working a few nights ago!

I didn't have to do that trick of using a cable or two to the FX Send/Line In either as I just ended up going through Pro Tools and it somehow all worked out right.

I do have a question though: Some of the tones are very high gain and the EQ is a little goofy on IR's I used. Do people that make the IR's generally have a default EQ set they use which is just supposed to be understood by the user, or is it just a matter of tweaking your settings with each IR you want to use?

That guy shows what they are and how they work in Pro Tools/Reaper/etc.

Its basically a "filter" you put on your guitar signal to pretty much transform it into different sounding cabinets/set-ups.

There are downloads out there, for free, closely emulating different guitarists/bands sounds.

You may need to play around with pre and post EQs, Singtall has some presets that are perfect for IRs. I can't think off hand right now the latest one I liked, but the Circus Maximus one worked great in Pro Tools with just the stock IRs in Mellowmuse.

In Pro Tools, you can also create a cab sim by tweaking the PSA-1 plugin. My goto IR now is one that I made from that. But the actual plugin has some cool compression and sustain and is worth a look. The presets aren't all that great, but you can dial up any kind of tone once you get used to the way it works.
