My iMac died so I switched to a late model Macbook Pro. When I hooked everything up and played just my iTunes app, the sound seemed like it had too much gain. Pops and clicks and overall bad audio. I have Mackie HR824 monitors. I checked the usual culprits (that I know of at least) reinstalled drivers, Checked system prefs. etc. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

Try updating your USB drivers and see if that helps.

Good Luck

pops and clicks sounds like a bit rate/sampling issue. try adjusting on the 11r.... what happened to your iMac? thought about fixing it?

you are on the right track!!
bit rate etc.
I mac has a better sound board inside.
most lap tops and etc pads are lower cost...
check the drivers etc...
also check the settings on the rates...
I bet there is something set to low rate or too hot of gain.

I had similar issues with the new win 8.1 laptops last summer.
it was a level issue...
settings inside defaulting on other programs.
works fine now.. was a pain to find!!
ask the apple store guy's... I bet they may know where to look exactly.
